Point Pleasant Board Of Education Thanks Departing Board Members For Their Service

Sue Byington, Sean Hagan and Cheryl Salway terms have expired.

A trio of Point Pleasant Board of Education members were honored for their combined nearly two decades of service on the board at the last meeting of the school board for the last meeting of 2016, according to the Ocean Star.

Superintendent of Schools Vincent S. Smith lauded board members Sue Byington, Sean Hagan and Cheryl Salway for their service to the borough and students over the years.

“Throughout their tenure with the board of education Sue, Sean and Cheryl have been tremendous assets to our district and the greater Point Pleasant Borough community by working alongside their fellow board members to ensure the best possible education experience for the children of Point Pleasant Borough,” Smith said.

Hagan has served as a member of the board of education since 2007 and also served as vice-president and board president.

“Looking back over the nine years I think a lot of good things have happened in the district," he said. "We have a fantastic district, from the administration to the faculty to the students and the parents ... that’s why we do so well in Point Pleasant ... and I know this district will continue to thrive. Byington has been a member of the board since 2008 and also served as president and vice-president.
“Thank you everybody for the opportunity,” she told a packed room of parents, students and community members alike.
“My dad was on the board and ... when the board appointed me I was given the opportunity to try to give some merit to his memory. Over time I have seen what an incredible district we have here. I am so proud to have been a part of this. I love Point Pleasant and I thank everyone very much for the opportunity to serve.”

Salway was appointed in September 2015 to serve for one-year unexpired board term following the resignation of board member Regina Foley.

“These 15 months on the board I feel like I have been educated greatly,” she said. “I learned so much about school finances and got to learn how awesome our students are in this district. I definitely look forward to continuing to stay involved in the future.”

Smith said that Byington, Hagan andSalway will be deeply missed.

“We’re very fortunate to have had them as board members and work alongside them for a very long time,” he said. “They’re going to be missed. They are really outstanding people in every sense of the word who have given their time and effort ... [you just] can’t put it into words.”
