97-Year-Old Former Princeton Firefighter Honored For Service
Lifelong resident Bob Higgins served Princeton Fire Station for 76 years.

PRINCETON, NJ — A lifelong Princeton resident, who served as a firefighter, was recently honored for his service to the community. Bob Higgins, 97, served Princeton Fire Station for 76 years.
Princeton Mayor Mark Freda, Fire Chief Adam Kooker, local firefighters and first responders were in attendance when Higgins was awarded a plaque and celebrated for his dedication to serving Princeton.
Higgins followed in his father’s footsteps becoming a firefighter. He was appointed an auxiliary fireman from age 16 until 21 when he became a full member and firefighter at Engine Company #1 Chestnut Street in Princeton.

He took a brief hiatus as a fireman to serve his country in the Army during World War II stationed in Europe for 14 months.
Upon his return, Higgins was offered the title of Chief but refused due to his work schedule at Ford Motors as he often had to travel for work.

Higgings is currently a resident at Brandywine Princeton, a senior living community
The team at Brandywine Princeton reached out to the fire station and the Mayor and got everyone on board to put together the ceremony.
"Your steadfast spirits and tireless efforts have made Princeton a safer place for all of us," said Stephanie Gaber, Life Enrichment Director, in an honorary speech to Higgins.
"Your legacy will continue to inspire future generations of firefighters and community members."
Higgins’ daughter, granddaughter, and great-granddaughter were in attendance for the ceremony.
