Princeton Events Commemorating 9/11

Here are some local events scheduled this week to honor the 10 year anniversary of 9/11.

Saturday Sept. 10

10 a.m. -4 p.m.

The Historical Society of Princeton, 354 Quaker Rd.

In commemoration of September 11, now a National Day of Service and Remembrance, the Historical Society of Princeton will open its restored Updike Farmhouse to the public.

The museum galleries feature the exhibit Caring Kids in the Community, which explores efforts of young people who seek to make a difference in people’s lives through community service. It features threegroups from the Princeton area, but also has an interactive component where visitors can not only learn about non-profit organizations, but also share volunteer experiences of their own.

Guests are encouraged to use the tranquility of the farm location for reflection. The poem “For Our World,” written by 11 year-old Mattie Stepanek on September 11, 2001, will be used as inspiration for journal and poetry writing throughout the day.

A donation of an individual portion of canned fruit, juice box or Chef Boyardee (or similar) microwave pasta is requested as admission. Items will be included in bagged meals for the homeless families of the Trenton Area Soup Kitchen.

With the back-drop of over 100 American flags in its current exhibition, Stars and Stripes: Fabric of the American Spirit, Morven Museum & Garden invites the community to join together as they remember Sept. 11, 2001. In honor of the 10th anniversary of this pivotal moment in American history, the museum will waive its regular admission fee today.

Visitors are encouraged to write their own thoughts on Morven’s memory board and become a part of the museum’s permanent collection.

 

Sunday, Sept. 11

 

9:15-10:15 a.m. 

Nassau Presbyterian Church, assembly room. Rep Rush Holt will reflect on the 10 years since 9/11.

Noon-4 p.m.

Princeton Borough Mayor Mildred Trotman will be on hand at the museum today to share her thoughts on this solemn historical milestone.

Princeton University will commemorate the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks with a ceremony on Cannon Green (or Dillon Gymnasium, in the event of rain).

Speakers will include Princeton President Shirley M. Tilghman, former U.S. Sen. Bill Bradley '65 and Professor Anthony Appiah. The Chapel Choir and Glee Club also will perform.

A Community Wide Interfaith Service to commemorate the Tenth Anniversary of Sept. 11, 2001, is scheduled at the Princeton University Chapel.
