PRINCETON, NJ – Experience Princeton has been awarded a $150,000 Transformation Grant from the Main Street New Jersey (MSNJ) program to enhance the town's business district and prepare for America's 250th anniversary celebration.

The grant will fund an economic feasibility study to improve Princeton's business mix and vitality, technology upgrades, promotional activities, and physical improvements including new plantings, furniture, and wayfinding systems.

"Princeton is thrilled to be one of the newest Main Street New Jersey designated communities and to be awarded this grant," said Experience Princeton Executive Director Isaac Kremer. Princeton earned its designation as one of 29 Main Street New Jersey communities after a competitive application process that concluded in late 2024.

The funding is part of Governor Phil Murphy's administration's broader commitment to community revitalization programs that support small businesses and neighborhood improvement projects, administered through the New Jersey Department of Community Affairs.

"Receiving the Main Street New Jersey designation is a significant honor and a reflection of our ongoing efforts to promote economic development and growth," said Councilwoman Michelle Pirone Lambros. "This grant allows us to invest in a range of valuable initiatives that support our local business and property owners."

The Main Street New Jersey program, established in 1989, helps municipalities strengthen their central business districts by organizing local citizens and resources. Designated communities receive technical support and training to restore their main streets as centers of economic and social activity.

State Senator Andrew Zwicker (LD-16) praised the award as "a smart investment in Princeton's future" that will strengthen the small business community while showcasing the town's rich history for the upcoming anniversary celebration.

"Not only will this money strengthen our small business community and ensure downtown Princeton remains vibrant and inclusive, but we can now look forward to showcasing the town’s rich history for America’s 250th anniversary. I’m proud to see Princeton recognized as a Main Street New Jersey community and grateful for the state’s continued commitment to local economic development," Zwicker said.

County Executive Dan Benson noted that Princeton's status as a tourist destination makes it "a great fit for Main Street designation and this transformation grant."

Experience Princeton has partnered with the municipality to plan and secure approvals for multiple projects, some beginning immediately and others rolling out over the coming months. All work is expected to be completed by June 1, 2026.

The Transformation Grants provide funding awards of up to $150,000 for projects that can be completed within 12 months.
