Group Asks Biden to Intervene in Princeton Battlefield Land Dispute

A member of the Princeton Battlefield Society has asked U.S. Vice President Joe Biden to help preserve land pivotal during the Battle of Princeton.

The following letter was emailed to the Vice President on Monday, April 23 and sent via U.S. mail on Tuesday, April 24.

Dear Mr. Vice President,

I am writing to request your assistance in saving a portion of the Princeton Battlefield in Princeton, New Jersey. The Battle  of Princeton, as you may recall, was a pivotal conflict of the American Revolution with the Continental Forces led by General George Washington. As a former Senator of Delaware, I am sure the name of Colonel John Haslet is familiar to you as well as Captain Thomas Rodney. Both men were sons of Delaware who fought bravely on January 3rd, 1777 in this battle.

A portion of the Princeton Battlefield, privately owned by the Institute for Advanced Study, is threatened with demise from a proposed housing development of 15 housing units on this parcel. This parcel extends the visual site line of the current Battlefield and is replete with archaeological remains. I am with the Princeton Battlefield Society which is presently trying to prevent this development from occurring.

Revolutionary War Battlefields are rare things and at this time, there is still a chance to preserve this one. I would greatly appreciate your intervention in this process, or appointing someone to act as mediator. The Institute states that they have a mediated settlement, but as a member of the chief opposition, no one spoke to us, so no mediation took place.

Mr. Vice President, as the Vice President, former Senator of Delaware, and fellow lover of history, please become involved with this "saving" of this piece of the battlefield. There truly are alternatives to the existing plan and people willing to guide the Institute to a position where American Heritage will not be destroyed.  Patriots took a beating, but refused to stay down and died on this parcel of land. Their efforts are an integral part of the story of this country; this story - our story - deserves protection, please help.

Respectfully,

Joe Carney
