Mercer’s Athing Mu Wins 800M Thriller At World Athletics Championship

Mu made history as the first American woman to win the 800m gold at the championship.

MERCER COUNTY, NJ – Track and field star Athing Mu won the 800m gold at the World Athletics Championship in Eugene, Oregon on Sunday.

Mu became the first American woman to win the 800m gold at the championship since it began in 1983.

The 20-year-old Trenton resident held off a late charge from Britan’s Keely Hodgkinson finishing in 1 minute 56:30 seconds – the fastest in the world this year. Hodgkinson finished behind Mu with a time of 1 minute 55:88 seconds.

"I love competing against other fast women," Mu told Team USA.

Mu remains undefeated after bagging two Tokyo Olympic gold medals in the 800m and 4x400m.

She is also the youngest woman in history to have won Olympic and world titles in individual track and field events.
