MERCER COUNTY, NJ - A new, state-of-the-art indoor pickleball facility is scheduled to open in Ewing Township in late January. A grand opening date is yet to be announced.

The Mercer Bucks Pickleball Club (MBPC) is the first such facility of its kind. With nine indoor courts, the 26,000 square-foot facility will be the largest indoor Pickleball facility in the Northeast, according to the MBPC.

A hybrid of tennis, ping pong, and badminton, pickleball is one of the fastest-growing sports in the country. The sport is played with lightweight paddles and balls similar to Wiffle balls on smaller courts.

The facility is a brainchild of two recently retired couples from Yardley, PA, who started playing pickleball together in the fall of 2020. The Voelzkes and Gabrieles became passionate about the sport and created a makeshift court with painter's tape and a portable net in their cul-de-sac. As the weather changed, they realized the need for an indoor Pickleball facility.

"We visited indoor pickleball facilities across the country and were certain we could bring the best-of-the-best to Mercer and Bucks counties. After searching the area for many months, we found the perfect location for fun and fitness with easy access for all," Sharon Voelzke said in a statement.

The facility has been soundproofed to diminish the "echo canyon" that most indoor paddle and sports facilities generate. LED lights will provide proper visibility and eliminate glare.

Meanwhile, the climate-controlled environment will always ensure perfect "pickleball weather" at the club, said the MBPC.

Between games, players can catch a game of cornhole, relax in the spacious lounge, or enjoy the grab-and-go MBPC Café with light snacks. There's also a private event room that can host birthday parties, social gatherings, or serve as a meeting space for business and team-building events. The MBPC is also planning to offer summer camps for young people.

The club will offer instruction at every level from beginners to the more advanced players. Instructors will be available for private and group lessons, as well as clinics and drills, the MBPC said.
