Princeton Public Library Communications Director Timothy Quinn has received a 2013 Movers and Shakers Award from library trade publication Library Journal. The award is given annually to individuals recognized by the editors as “emerging leaders in the library world who are innovative, creative and making a difference.”Â
Quinn, who is responsible for the library’s marketing and brand identity, was recognized primarily for his efforts in establishing Princeton Public Library as a critical first responder during community emergencies. Through social media and other outlets, he conveyed that the library was open and a place to find relief in the wake of Hurricane Irene in 2011 and Superstorm Sandy in 2012.

“He immediately understood that the library’s response post-storm was critical to establishing how essential it is to the community,” said library executive director Leslie Burger.Â
On the day after Hurricane Irene hit New Jersey, Princeton Public Library served 4,500 people (nearly double the daily average), most of whose homes were without power. Quinn is president of the Princeton Board of Education and a member of the Princeton Planning Board. He is treasurer of the Anchor House Foundation Board of Directors and for 20 years has been a participant in the Anchor House Ride for Runaways, which raises funds for a shelter for homeless and abused children in Trenton.
Quinn’s recognition brings to five the number of Princeton Public Library staffers who have received Library Journal’s Movers and Shakers award.
Programming librarian Janie Hermann received the award in 2007; and youth services librarian Susan Conlon and children’s librarian Allison Santos were recipients in 2009. Princeton Public Library assistant director Peter Bromberg was recognized in 2008 while on staff with the South Jersey Regional Library Cooperative.
Library Journal began recognizing Movers and Shakers on an annual basis in 2002, and since that time 25 recipients have been from New Jersey. Princeton Public Library’s five award-winners represent 20 percent of that total, a unique distinction.
“Our staff is always seeking ways to innovate and provide excellent customer service for our community,” said Burger. “These awards are indicative of the strong team we have assembled here at the library to serve the community.”
