Princeton Borough Files Motion for New Trial

Officials say they disagree with last month's jury verdict that awarded $525,000 to a former police officer.

Princeton Borough has filed a motion a new trial after a jury in Mercer County Superior Court awarded former borough police officer Gary Mitchell $525,000, according the Daily Princetonian.

Mitchell, a black officer, had complained of racial discrimination in 2006. He claimed that soon thereafter, he faced disciplinary charges by former chief Anthony Federico in retaliation. He was offered retirement in exchange for the charges being dropped.

The borough attorney told the Daily Princetonian that borough officials disagree with the jury’s verdict that determined that the police department did not discriminate against Mitchell, but that the department had retaliated against him for filing a complaint.
