Princeton Students To Hold Fundraiser To Help Refugee, Immigrant Resettlement

The event will be hosted by SARI, a student-run nonprofit first started at Princeton High School.

PRINCETON, NJ — A Princeton-based student-led nonprofit is hosting a fundraising dinner to help resettle area refugees and immigrants.

Student Alliance with Refugees and Immigrants or SARI is a student-run nonprofit that has been active since 2021. The club was first started at Princeton High School.

During the 2022-2023 school year, SARI organized an ELL educational enrichment program at the Hun School. And in July 2023, they became a non-profit to expand and formalize resettlement efforts.

The students will be hosting the first annual Dinner for Change on Oct. 14, at the Jewish Center of Princeton.

During the fundraiser, attendees will learn from New Jersey Refugee Resettlement professionals and volunteers about the challenges faced by individuals and families who are new to the Princeton area and how locals can create welcoming and inclusive communities.

SARI currently supports resettlement through student volunteer recruitment, educational programs, and fundraising to help meet the needs of local families and to educate area high school students about some of the ways they can make a difference in their schools and communities.

“We are creating coalitions with students from area high schools to organize clubs, each of which will develop programming with the support of the SARI leadership,” the nonprofit said in a statement.

“We want to help create a model for other schools and students to get involved and make a difference in their communities.”

The students also plan to host a summit for all area high school SARI volunteers in early 2024.
