Princeton Weekend Guide: March 8-10

Our roundup of fun and interesting events this weekend.

 

Friday

 Princeton Marriott, 7 p.m. to midnight.

The Princeton University Orchestra presents three winners of the  2013 Concerto Competition. The program includes Bach’s Piano Concerto No. 5 in F Minor, BWV 1086, Vivaldi’s Bassoon Concerto in E Minor, RV 484 and Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 1 in C Major, Op. 15.  The orchestra performs Wagner’s Preludes to Acts I and III, Liebestod from Tristan und Isolde.  Princeton University, Alexander Hall, 7:30 p.m.

A play: In the Next Room, or the Vibrator Play by Sarah Ruhl. In the twilight of the Victorian age, a buzzworthy new medical device is developed to calm women with "hysteria." Berlind Theatre at McCarter Theatre Center, 8 p.m. 

Bravura Philharmonic Young Virtuosi of the Tri-State Area will present students ages 8 - 18 on all instruments participating in the Young Artists Concerto Competition, 8 p.m.

Saturday

Tons of Activities for Pi Day Princeton all day, including a kids' violin contest, exhibits at the Princeton University Art Museum, activities at the Historical Society of Princeton, an Einstein Look-A-Like Contest, brainteaser activities, origami, Rubik's Cube solving demonstrations, Woodrow Wilson Centennial Gala Dinner and an evening of music and comedy. 

Princeton Junior School will host a Toy and Book Fair to benefit children affected by Hurricane Sandy. Includes hands-on LEGO building activity and musical entertainment. Proceeds will be used to fulfill wish lists for the children of Lavallette Elementary School who were displaced by the hurricane, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. 

Princeton Record Exchange will host legendary blues/rock guitarist Johnny Winter. He will be visiting the store for about an hour before a show at the New Hope Winery later that evening. He will pose for photos, sign autographs, and talk to his fans, 5 p.m. 

Stop Correcting Me: “Waiting For Da Flow.” Bassist Wilbo Wright and saxophonist Eric Haltmeier perform and interact in response to the artwork in the exhibition Structure and Flow, 5 pm.  

 Princeton Theological Seminary, 5-8 p.m. 

Join Princeton’s female student-athletes at Jadwin Gym in celebration of National Girls & Women in Sports Day. The interactive sports at 5 p.m., featuring Princeton’s women’s ice hockey, squash and track & field. Also, a bounce house and facepainting. At 6 p.m., watch Princeton women's basketball, the three time defending Ivy League champions, play against Brown. Autographs from the basketball team to follow.

Small World Coffee presents "Sacco E Vanzetti", in their cosmically and politically enhanced intergalactic performance of the libretto of their opera by the same name. Combining spoken word, music, multi-media, and theater, 8:30 p.m. 

 

Sunday

Pi Day Princeton activities all day, including a pie eating contest, activities at the Historical Society of Princeton, Dinky train rides with Einstein, Pi Recitation Contest, Pie Judging Contest, Pie Throwing on Palmer Square Green, Guided "insiders Only" Tour of Princeton by Re-enactors and Pi Social featuring band PiFight. 

A Fun Run to benefit Hurricane Sandy Relief. There will be both a 5K and 8K (3.25 miles and 4.75 miles). The run will start at CrossFit Nassau, located at 255 Nassau Street, Princeton, NJ.  This is a fun run, not a timed race, so come out with some friends, meet new people and support a good cause. Registration begins at 8 a.m., race begins at 9. 

Princeton Symphony Orchestra presents works by Debussy and Mahler. Das Lied von der Erde (The Song of the Earth) explores nature, rejuvenation, and the earth’s mysteries- performed by tenor Zach Borichevsky and mezzo soprano Margaret Mezzacappa. Also: Debussy’s Prélude à l’après-midi d’un faune. Richardson Auditorium, Princeton University, 4 p.m. 

Nassau Presbyterian Church presents The Lyons Chamber Players performing Serenade No. 1 by Johannes Brahms, 4 p.m.
