Princeton Weekend Guide: May 17-19

Here's a list of the fun and exciting things going on in the area this weekend.

 

Friday

Dangerous Blossoms.”  Art ranges from images of plants that poison humans to beautiful but fatal flowers increasingly destroying native species in our region, 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. 

Opera MODO presents Gaetano Donizetti’s L’Elisir d’Amore, All Saints Church, 7:30 p.m.

Featuring current and recent PDS alums and student groups from other local high schools. All proceeds will benefit the American Red Cross disaster relief fund, 8 p.m. 

New Jersey Symphony Orchestra presents Tchaikovsky's Fifth Symphony and the east coast premiere of Steven Mackay's Stumble to Grace Concerto for Piano and Orchestra, Richardson Auditorium, Princeton University, 8 p.m.

Lines of Reason: a jazz quartet featuring Clifford Adams from Kool and The Gang on trombone and vocals is the second installment of the Paul Robeson Tribute Series which explores African American music and its impact on modern music. Arts Council of Princeton, 8 p.m.

Princeton High School's Spectacle Theatre presents "The Bard!" Shakespeare comes alive with this approachable introduction to the famous Bard's life and times as well as abridged scenes from five Shakespeare plays, Performing Arts Center, 8 p.m. 

 at Christ Congregation, 8:15 p.m. 

Spring Native Plant Sale at D&R Greenway Land Trust. Flower arrangement demonstration at 5 p.m. 3-6 p.m. 

 

Saturday

Spring Native Plant Sale at D&R Greenway Land Trust. Flower arrangement demonstration at 10:30 a.m., 9 a.m. to noon. 

5K Run and Dog Walk, followed by massages for dogs, demonstrations and more. Pulitzer Prize winner John Nash, a mathematician and the subject of 'A Beautiful Mind,' and his wife, Alicia, will participate. 5K run begins at 9 a.m. Dog walk begins at 10 a.m., Mercer County Park, east area, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. 

Celebrate Riverside Elementary School's gardens and help raise money for garden education. "Healthy Children, Healthy Planet" will feature music, food (Bent Spoon, Kale Salads from Whole Earth), a plant sale, garden tours and activities, rescue vehicles and lots of great crafts for kids. A family yoga class at 11 a.m. in the garden. 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. 

Children ages 3 to 5 are invited to Tots on Tour at Grounds for Sculpture. Listen to a story, become park explorers, make original works of art. 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. 

 Learn about the British soldiers: the trials, tribulations and the terrors they faced. Learn about Washington's Aide de Camps, who they were, why they fought and why Washington wanted them and no one else. Washington's most trusted general, Nathanael Greene. A reception follows. Tickets required. 1-5 p.m.

Opera Gala, featuring overtures, ensemble and choruses from operas presented by Westminster Conservatory voice faculty and friends, Westminster Community Chorus and Westminster Conservatory Community Orchestra, Richardson Auditorium, Princeton University, 8 p.m. 

'Oh, What a Night'  Gala at McCarter Theater, in in conjunction with concert by The Midtown Men. The four stars from the original Broadway cast of 'Jersey Boys' include Christian Hoff, Michael Longorio, Daniel Reichard and J. Robert Spencer, 8 p.m. 

 

Sunday

a showcase for young musicians heard weekly on NPR.  The Boychoir will perform works by Maurice Duruflé, John Phillip Sousa, Johann Sebastian Bach and The Beatles in a first-ever taping in Princeton.  Richardson Auditorium, Princeton University, 4 p.m.
