Gov. Murphy Extends NJ's Coronavirus Public Health Emergency

WATCH: Gov. Phil Murphy extended NJ's public health emergency amid the COVID-19 crisis as cases have spiked in four counties.

NEW JERSEY –Gov. Phil Murphy, speaking during a Friday news conference, extended New Jersey's public health emergency amid the coronavirus crisis as the state deals with spikes in at least four counties.

He made the announcement as he revealed 612 new coronavirus cases and seven more deaths on Friday, and 760 new cases and six more deaths on Saturday (you can watch it here, below).

The update comes as the number of cases has risen to 202,100, and 14,306 confirmed deaths have been reported (see the daily list of new cases below).

The days' totals means that New Jersey had its largest two-day increase in cases since June 5th. "That's 1,200 new cases," Murphy said. Read more: NJ Coronavirus, School Reopen Updates: Here's What You Need To Know

Murphy extended the coronavirus outbreak's public health emergency for another 30 days, saying that New Jersey is "not out of the woods" as it continues to deal with possible spikes in cases in four counties: Gloucester, Ocean, Middlesex and Monmouth.

The declaration means the state will continue to have the authority to order new shutdowns and take similar extraordinary acts if the virus resurges, as it has done in other states.

"We continue to be vigilant and prepared and ready to act should there be a new outbreak," Murphy said.

Ironically, the declaration and report of an uptick in cases came a day after Dr. Anthony Fauci told Murphy that New Jersey has made enough progress to safely and "competently" reopen its economy and schools. Read more: Dr. Fauci: NJ Can Now Reopen 'Competently' Amid Coronavirus

Health Commissioner Judith Persichilli outlined where New Jersey has seen the "uptick," and why:

  • Since Monday, Ocean County has had 439 new cases, Monmouth has had 248, Middlesex has had 220 and Gloucester has had 130.
  • The demographic that's had the highest rise in cases in Ocean County is the 18-29 age group.
  • Ocean County is currently tracking 100 and 150 new cases a day, and at least half have been in Lakewood.
  • More than 6,000 test kits have been sent to Ocean County, and the health department has sent additional contact tracers to the region. More will go there next week, Persichilli said.
  • In Monmouth County, the state also has dispatched additional contact tracers. That area has had an increase because of business operations and house gatherings, she said.
  • Gloucester has had an increase because of student housing issues at Rowan University, but those new case numbers have been on the decline.

"So whether it's through worship, whether it's through indoor home gatherings, regardless of what the reasons are – adjacent activities to school activities or sports teams – we are not out of the woods," Murphy said.

Murphy called Ocean County and Lakewood "hotspots," saying there is likely a relationship to worship for Rosh Hashanah.

"But I say that advisedly because every religion in the state has a right to practice and worship on its holidays on its day of worship," Murphy said.

Murphy warned against basing assumptions on what happened in Lakewood on prejudices and biases, telling people to "check them at the door."

Murphy also said New Jersey continues to also suffer from a lack of cooperation with contact tracers, saying the number of people not responding increased from 56 to 58 percent last week.
