How did you come up with the idea for Your Friendly Math Tutor?

Our lead tutor, Dan, worked as a public school math teacher for seven years as well as at several other learning centers. He decided he wanted to focus on one-on-one tutoring to really connect with his students and make an impact on their learning environment. He took everything he learned from his background in the classroom and learning centers to create a more individualized experience.

What makes Your Friendly Math Tutor unique among other math learning centers?

Everything we do is tailored to each student's needs. Our tutors are either certified teachers or full-time tutors so we have the ability to meet the student exactly where he or she is and work from there. Whether it is remediating for a student who feels behind or teaching ahead for a student who wants to become familiar with the material before being exposed in the classroom, we can help!

What motivated you to create a learning environment that encourages independence and creativity?

Students are often taught the answers to problems without a full understanding of how or where these answers come from. We focus on making sure students actually know why they are doing the steps so they can develop critical thinking skills to enable them to tackle more difficult examples. We want our students to feel prepared and confident when they are faced with new topics and subjects.

What process do you use to pair students with their individual tutors?

We are a very small family owned learning center so we made sure to hire the very best tutors! Our center director will walk you through the registration process and we will review our calendars together to find a day and time that works best for your student.

How do you ensure that each student receives an individualized learning plan?

We do not follow a set curriculum so each lesson is driven by what the student needs at that time. During the free first session our tutors will assess the skill level of the student and work from there. And each subsequent lesson can be different, our tutors can teach mini lessons to really dive deep into the mathematical concepts, we can offer homework help, we can circle back to previously covered topics to clear up any confusion, whatever you need!
