On Tuesday, Feb. 10, Kula for Karma, a non-profit organization that provides free, therapeutic yoga programs to special needs populations across Bergen, Passaic and Essex Counties, will be hosting “Listen to Your Heart,” a community, group meditation event at the home of jewelry designer Robin Labb in Tenafly.

“Listen to Your Heart” will be an evening of conversation, libations, meditation and pure food. An introduction to Guided meditation will be led by Jennifer Graf, LCSW. The event, a fundraiser for Kula for Karma’s therapeutic yoga programs at the Graf Center for Integrative Medicine at Englewood Hospital Medical Center, will be on Feb. 10 from 7 to 9 p.m. at Home of Jewelry Designer Robin Labb, located at 292 Engle Street in Tenafly.

Kula for Karma trains and provides the volunteer yoga instructors who lead yoga and meditation programs offered to cancer and cardiac patients, military veterans, domestic violence victims, at-risk youth, and people in recovery for substance abuse and addiction at medical institutions as Hackensack University Medical Center, Englewood Hospital and Medical Center and Valley Hospital in Ridgewood. These programs, offered at no cost to these patients and clients, are the result of Kula for Karma’s partnerships with these medical institutions.

Kula for Karma (kulaforkarma.org) was founded eight years ago by Ridgewood yoga teacher Geri Topfer, to promote and pioneer the partnership of traditional medicine and holistic healing known as integrative medicine.

In those eight years, the research touting the medical benefits of yoga and meditation has grown right along with the establishment of integrative medicine programs at leading medical institutions across the county. New Jersey has followed this trend, and Kula for Karma has been a driving force behind that. Kula for Karma now offers more than 200 programs to populations facing mental and physical challenges.

Kula for Karma’s story is a great human interest story about the mission and passion behind the founding and growth of the organization, the dedication and generosity of its volunteer instructors and the courage of the clients who are coming to yoga and meditation at the most challenging time of their lives. But more than that, it’s the story of the future of health care and medicine, the increasing role that integrative approaches will play in the treatment of both physical and psychological disorders, and patient empowerment.
