SHREWSBURY, NJ — Republican Jackie Woehnker is one of two candidates seeking election to a one-year unexpired term on the Shrewsbury Borough Council in the Nov. 8 general election.

In these profiles, candidates provide voters with background about themselves and their positions on the issues. Patch will publish individual profiles leading to the election.

Woehnker was appointed to fill the seat in January, replacing Republican Kim Eulner, who was elected to the state Assembly. She is now seeking election to the one-year unexpired term. She wants to encourage youth participation in sports and also wants to encourage more fire and first aid volunteerism. "Open space, shade tree and community garden initiatives are areas of focus for me," she says.

Name the top three issues or more if that is the case currently facing your town and how
you plan to address them.

  • Property taxes. New Jersey, Monmouth County and Shrewsbury residents continue to face some of the highest taxes in the country. It’s imperative that we continue to work toward reduction of municipal expenses without reducing services.
  • Volunteerism on Fire and First Aid squads. Our Fire and EMT crews are 100 percent volunteer and need our help to attract and retain volunteers.
  • Youth athletic opportunities. Shrewsbury is a small town with a smaller pool of athletes in comparison to neighboring towns. The SYAA is working hard to increase, improve and expand programs and opportunities for Shrewsbury athletes.

Identify one or more specific goals or ideas you have to enhance life in your town:

  • Open space, shade tree and community garden initiatives are areas of focus for me. The investment in, maintenance of and improvements upon our parks, foliage and community spaces/efforts are imperative to maintaining our special Shrewsbury way of life.

Background:

I have been serving on council since January of this year and am currently on the Open Space and Fire and First Aid committees as well as the liaison to the Shade Tree Commission and Shrewsbury Community Garden. In addition, I have also been an active volunteer in town for several years through the school and town programs. My background as an HR professional for a large financial institution also lends itself to serving the public on Borough Council.
