Red Bank Resident 'Bette' Schreiber Hammersley Dies at 91

Services slated for Nov. 23

Red Bank resident Elizabeth (Bette) Anne Schreiber Hammersley passed away peacefully, surrounded by loved ones, on Nov. 3  at 91.

Born on Jan. 19, 1922, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, she was the daughter of Elizabeth Parks and Francis Louis Schreiber.

Bette was predeceased by: her parents; her husband William Hammersley II; her brother, Francis Louis Schreiber, Jr., and sister-in-law, Sadie Schreiber; and her sister, Julia Haldeman. Surviving are her three children, William Hammersley III and wife Cheryl, of California, Jill Gemmel and husband William, of Middletown, and Linda Hammersley and partner Donna Nelis of Haddonfield; seven grandchildren, Lisa, Rob, Laurie, Patti, Pam, Billy, and Alexis; and eleven great-grandchildren, Taylor, Sawyer, Spencer, Bradley, Jillian, Morgan, Brooks, Hayden, Zoe, Wills and Becks.

Bette retired from The Bank of New York at 71, her obituary on the Thompson Memorial Home website said.  "Loved by all who had the pleasure of knowing her, Bette had an amazing memory and a keen sense of humor, telling her favorite jokes right up to the end of her life," it added. "A devoted wife and mother, she gave to her children a happy childhood on the Jersey shore. In her retirement years, Bette kept active through Christ Episcopal Church by volunteering in The Thrift Shop, working on The Church Crier and serving food at St. Mark's Soup Kitchen."

A memorial service in honor of Bette will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 23, at Christ Episcopal Church, 90 Kings Highway, Middletown. Interment will immediately follow at Fair View Cemetery.
