“We are beyond excited for our students to start using the beautiful new building," MacConnell said. "The extra space will make the school day run more smoothly and gives us room to accommodate many more activities during and after school."
“We are grateful that community members invested in this project through the referendum, and we hope they join us to celebrate this milestone," MacConnell continued.
The expansion to the one-school, pre-K-8 district was the central piece of a bond referendum that passed in October 2022.
The new addition contains three pre-K classrooms and an all-purpose room (APR) that will provide more flexibility for scheduling daily activities.
Students will eat lunch in the APR and use the original gym for physical education and assemblies. New playground equipment, installed outside the new addition, will also help students stay active, district officials said.
Other referendum projects for Shrewsbury Borough School are focused on security, comfort, and efficiency throughout the school.
Security upgrades include enhanced entrances to let Main Office staff control visitor access, new classroom doors with instant locking mechanisms and new windows with shatter-resistant film.
In addition to the security upgrades, all classrooms will now have air conditioning to enhance student health and focus, with HVAC and electrical systems upgraded to more efficient models. The new systems will save the district on energy costs and avoid costly repairs, officials said.
“The improvements to our building will benefit Shrewsbury students for many years to come,” Board of Education President Jessica Groom said. “This is a proud moment for our school and community.”
