Shrewsbury Celebrates a Garden

The council and garden committee held a ribbon cutting and sign unveiling ceremony over the weekend.

In the eyes of Shrewsbury Mayor Donald Burden, community gardens about much more than just produce. 

Community gardens, he told a crowd gathered to see Shrewsbury's community garden officially introduced with a ribbon cutting, engender positive relationships, create new experiences and develop stronger feelings of community. Gardening is a form of exercise and therapy and can also promote food education and healthy living.

Most of all, he said, community gardens bring people together.

On Saturday, officials signaled the official opening of the garden by cutting a ribbon and unveiling two signs that help identify the garden and those responsible for bringing it together.

Councilman Tom Menapace said the idea of a community garden first came before council during a July, 2011 meeting. Just a good idea to start, work soon began in making the garden a reality.
