Shrewsbury Student Takes a Win in Daughters of American Revolution Essay Contest
Contest featured forgotten patriots subject

The Shrewsbury Towne-Monmouth Chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution announced the winners of this year’s essay contest, with Shrewsbury's Michelle Mazzucca taking third place for the eighth grade category.
For more than 25 years, an essay topic has been determined by the society’s headquarters in Washington, DC in conjunction with local public, private, parochial schools and registered home study programs.
Students in grades five through eight are invited to participate in the contest.

This year’s topic was “The Forgotten Patriots Who Supported the American Struggle for Independence,” with the focus on unrecognized people and groups, including African Americans, Native Americans, Hispanics, women and others who provided military and other public service in support of the American Revolution.
All first place winning essays will be submitted for judging at the state level. The state winners are then sent to the regional level, with those winners to then be judged on a national level.

Winners for the local chapter, state level and national levels receive certificates and monetary awards.

Fifth Grade
1. Alissa Amchentseva — Woodmere Eatontown and third place on the state level

Sixth Grade
1. Andrew Colanino — St. Leo the Great – and second place on the state level

Seventh Grade
1. Michael Demasi — St. Leo the Great — and third place on the state level
