Over 50 years ago, folk singer and environmental activist Pete Seeger realized a dream by getting the 106-foot sloop Clearwater launched to spread the word for a cleaner environment, the organization says.
Then, with the impetus of folksinger Bob Killian, Monmouth County Friends of Clearwater was formed in 1974.
The organization's current name, New Jersey Friends of Clearwater, reflects its goals and outreach, yet continues its close affiliation with Hudson River Sloop Clearwater, Inc., as a Clearwater Sloop Club.
The Navesink Maritime Heritage Association is dedicated to engaging Eastern Monmouth County with maritime and water-related historical, skill building, environmental, and recreational activities, and encourages the responsible use of the Navesink estuary through its "Discover, Engage, and Sustain" approach, the organization says.
If you'd like a sail, please sign up at the check-in table at Marine Park.
