Bottle King Shoplifter, Bank Scams: Glen Rock Blotter

GLEN ROCK, NJ - Police responded to 263 calls for service between March 3 and 8.

03-03-2020 - Fire On Boulevard

6:32 PM – Patrols, along with Glen Rock Firefighters, were dispatched to what was initially reported as a smoke condition inside a single-family dwelling at 211 Boulevard. Upon arrival P.O. T.J. Graziani observed that the condition was a working structure fire. All occupants of the residence had safely evacuated as the officer arrived.

The main fire area was in the attic space of the home. Firefighters used a combination of interior and exterior attacks to bring the fire under control. Support was provided by Firefighters from Hawthorne, Fair Lawn, Ridgewood, Midland Park, Paramus, Waldwick, Wyckoff and Elmwood Park as well as Northwest and Central Bergen Mutual Aid coordinators and safety officers.

EMT’s from the Glen Rock Volunteer Ambulance Corps also responded to the scene for fire standby.

03-03-2020 - Email Scam

1:19 PM – A Glen Rock woman reported that she received an email from whom she thought was the Rabbi of her temple seeking assistance. The email asked that she purchase five eBay gift cards for $100 each and that she would be reimbursed. The complainant was further instructed to scratch off the card numbers, photograph them and then email the photo to the Rabbi.

While the woman did this, she called the Rabbi by phone before sending the photos and was informed that this was a scam. No such email had been sent; the email address was fraudulent. The complainant was able to return the gift cards for a full refund and there was no financial loss.

03-04-2020 - Fraudulent Bank Activity

14:08 – A Glen Rock man reported that a family member had fraudulently used his name and forged his signature as a co-signer on a loan. He only recently learned of this when the loan became past due and he received the default notice. Following the filing of a police report the lender has agreed to clear his name from the loan and refer the matter to their fraud investigators. Glen Rock detectives are also reviewing this matter.

03-05-2020 - Bank Account Hacked

1:12 PM – A Glen Rock man reported that his Chase bank checking account had been compromised. Person(s) unknown submitted a change of address to Miami, Florida and made four fraudulent withdrawals totaling $ 1,996.95. The detective bureau is currently reviewing the matter.

03-05-2020 - Fraudulent Account Opened

1:15 PM – A Glen Rock man, who had previously learned that a fraudulent checking account had been opened in his name, was informed by his accountant that a fraudulent tax return has been filed in his name electronically. The accountant has notified the IRS and is in the process of filing a legitimate tax return on paper. The IRS has required that a police report be filed as well. The detective bureau is currently reviewing this matter.

03-07-2020 - Shoplifting Incident

2:32 PM – The staff at Bottle King Liquors on Prospect Street reported that a shoplifter had taken a bottle of Hennessy valued at $69.99 from the store. The suspect, described as a dark-skinned female wearing a white hooded sweatshirt and jeans, had left the store about an hour before the incident was reported. It is believed that this same actor may have committed a similar offense at another Bottle King Store recently. The detective bureau is currently reviewing the matter.
