Budget Passes, Fatal Train Strike, College List Controversy This Week

A Waldwick man, Mark Moglia, was fatally struck by a train in Ridgewood. Authorities believe Moglia was walking along the tracks and attempted to avoid the oncoming train but was struck by a final car as the locomotive passed.

Underdog Jim Morgan beat nine-year board member Bob Hutton for a seat on the school board Tuesday. He'll serve a one-year-term. Vince Loncto, the lead vote getter, beat Gina Damasco for a three-year seat. The board reorganizes on Monday.

Ridgewood's $90 million budget passed with relative ease on Tuesday. Taxes for the average homeowner will rise $195 but there are no projected program or teaching staff cuts.

Glen Rock seniors are up in arms over an administrative aim to discontinue the publishing of a list detailing which colleges graduating seniors are attending. 

Ridgewood library officials presented the council with a myriad of reasons they feel library funding should be restored to 2009 levels. Still, there's a good chance that full funding level isn't met. Closings could still take place.

The borough's school board, despite hesitancies, approved a bid to fix long-standing drainage problems and modernize its high school athletic facilities. The $3.5 million project – which includes new turf – came in under budget.

Friends and family drove to Toms River to pay their last respects to one of Ridgewood's finest. Anthony Dinice, the first in a long line of RPD members, died last weekend.

Given the revolving door that's been the principal position at Central School, Superintendent David Verducci says finding someone there for the long-haul is a major component of the ongoing search. He hopes a permanent replacement for Andrew Matteo will be ready for the new school year.
