Bergen County Resident Reports Tax Scam, Police Give Warning

Tax Day is looming, and one resident reported a tax return scam to local police in Bergen County. The police have a message.

GLEN ROCK, NJ — A Glen Rock resident told police last Wednesday that they'd found out that someone filed a fraudulent tax return using their identity.

The person found out when the Internal Revenue Service sent them a message by U.S. mail, they said.

The person is working with the IRS and their accountant to resolve the matter, police said.

With taxes due a week from next Tuesday — on April 15 — this type of fraud is very common at this time of year. (Find out more about the filing deadline and how to get a 6-month extension here.)

The police said they wanted to remind residents that if the IRS reaches out, it will be via U.S. mail.

"Their initial contact with the taxpayer will be via US mail," police said. "The IRS does not initiate investigations by phone or text."

The deadline for filing in two weeks is midnight in your time zone, according to H&R Block.
