Student Brings Replica Firearm to Ridgewood Middle School

An airsoft gun was removed from a George Washington Middle School's student's locker Wednesday morning; students and staff were never in danger, principal says.

A student is facing discplinary action after bringing in a replica firearm to Ridgewood's Wednesday morning.

According to a letter written to parents Wednesday afternoon, Principal Katie Kashmanian says an undisclosed student brought an airsoft gun that shoots plastic pellets to school.

"The replicas are designed to be non-lethal but they can look realistic and are understandably frightening when people see them," Kashmanian wrote.

After learning of the gun's presence in the student's locker, administrators handed over the replica to police, Kashmanian's letter states. Administrators and police have met with the student's parents to "discuss further disciplinary action as well as other appropriate interventions," Kashmanian said.

The principal said students and staff were not in danger at any point during the incident, and said it's believed to be an "isolated" occurrence.

"The presence of any weapon in school, or even just the perception that there is a weapon in school, is a serious matter demanding a prompt and appropriate response," Kashmanian said to parents. "Be assured that I will always take every appropriate action to protect the safety and wellbeing of our students and staff."

It's not the first time this year a Ridgewood student has brought in a device that appeared to resemble a gun. A Somerville Elementary School student in March .

Last year, , and were believed to have been props for a student film.

Police said a report has not been finalized and could not comment on the case.
