BC Grads Head to D1 Bowl Games

Former Golden Hawk Rookie deMarrias had an outstanding freshman season

Former Bergen Catholic Crusaders Bill Schautz and Matt O'Brien are heading to the big time when they each compete in Division 1 bowl games

Bill Schautz and Matt O’Brien, two other Bergen Catholic graduates, are playing in Division I bowl games. Schautz, a junior from Bloomfield, is a safety for Virginia, which plays Auburn in the Chickfil- A Bowl on New Year’s Eve, and O’Brien, a sophomore from New Milford, is a safety for South Carolina, which plays Nebraska in the Capital One Bowl on Jan. 2.

Troy McKenna’s last football season at Lehigh proved to be his best.

Not only did the senior left tackle from Paramus fill the void left by FCS All-American Will Rackley, now starting for the Jacksonville Jaguars, he played well enough to be named third team All-American. Lehigh had three All-Americans for the first time since 1984. Lehigh was 11-2, won the Patriot League title for the second straight season, and reached the FCS playoff quarterfinals for the first time since 2001.

McKenna moved to left tackle from right tackle, where he started as a junior. After suffering a foot injury in the preseason, the former Bergen Catholic standout started Lehigh’s final 10 games, and was one of the leaders on a line that allowed the Mountain Hawks to rush for 129 yards per game and throw for more than 340 yards, while giving up only 17 sacks.

After missing his senior season at River Dell because of shoulder surgery, Glenn de Marrias handled all of the long snapping duties for Hamilton College as a freshman. He had 66 error-free snaps.
