Grab Your 76 Trombones for "The Music Man" Auditions

Open auditions will span a four-day period at the Oradell-based Bergen County Players

This week the Oradell-based community theater group  will hold open auditions for its 80th season opening, The Music Man, one of the most beloved musicals of all time. With book, music and lyrics by Meredith Willson, and based on a story by Meredith Willson and Franklin Lacey, auditions will take place at the Little Firehouse Theatre, 298 Kinderkamack Road in Oradell, from Tuesday May 22 thru Thursday, May 24. Performances are scheduled to run September 6 through Oct. 6, 2012.

Directed by Larry Landsman of Wyckoff, musical directed by Steven Bell of Teaneck, choreographed by Vanessa Garrabrant of Harriman, NY, and produced by Kathie Robitz of Westwood, The Music Man is an affectionate paean to Smalltown, U.S.A. of a bygone era. It follows fast-talking traveling salesman Harold Hill as he cons the people of River City, Iowa into buying instruments and uniforms for a boys’ band he vows to organize – this despite the fact he doesn’t know a trombone from a treble clef. His plans to skip town with the cash are foiled when he falls for Marian the librarian, who transforms him into a respectable citizen by curtain’s fall. Winner of eight Tony Awards, including Best Musical, the Bergen County Players’ 80thseason opener will feature a live orchestra and a cast of over 30.

This award-winning, critically acclaimed Broadway classic is an all-American institution, thanks to its quirky characters, charmingly predictable dramatic situations, and one-of-a-kind, nostalgic score of rousing marches, barbershop quartets and sentimental ballads that have become popular standards such as Till There Was You; Seventy-Six Trombones; Ya Got Trouble; Gary, Indiana; Pick a Little; Shipoopi and Goodnight My Someone. By turns wicked, funny, warm, romantic and touching, The Music Man is family entertainment at its best.
