Sports Recap: Hockey Struggles To Start off Season
A weekly look back at how the Golden Hawks and Crusaders have fared at winter athletics
The River Dell/Westwood hockey team is having a rough start to their 2011 season having dropped two major blowouts over the week with a 9-1 decision to Tenafly and then a 7-1 loss to Paramus Catholic. The Golden Hawks sit with a 0-4 record.
Facing the Tigers, the defense struggled early as Tenafly took an early lead in the first and continued the route in the second period with five additional goals to lead 6-0 at the break. Coming into the final period the Hawks were able to get onto the board when Ryan Callahan fed the puck to Bryan Codner to avoid the shutout, but Tenafly stayed strong tacking on three more goals for the final 9-1 win.
Both Connor O'Reilly (18 saves) and Chris Detitta (17 saves) saw time between the posts but neither could stave off the Tigers onslaught.
