Iorio, Melde and Sebastian Bring Home Region 2 Titles to BC
Nine local wrestlers will be heading down to Atlantic City for the state championship

It was a long weekend of wrestling at the Region 2 tournament at Hackensack High School but overall between the finals and third place consolations nine athletes will be heading to the state finals in Atlantic City this upcoming weekend. Three Crusaders Lukas Iorio, Connor Melde and Johnny Sebastian each earned a Region 2 title in their respective weight class.
Iorio's trip to Atlantic City followed a technical fall in the quarterfinals then a major decision in the semis and lastly a 9-2 decision over River Dell's Nick Baranello. Due to his second place finish, Baranello will also be heading to Atlantic City.
Melde and Sebastian had early quarterfinal pins and a technical fall and a pin respectively to cruise into the finals. Melde took down Steven Schneider of Emerson/Park Ridge, 5-1 in the finals with Sebastian rolling to a 10-1 victory over rival Matt Dickman of Glen Rock/Saddle Brook.

Rounding out the roster to Atlantic City will be Christian Jenco (195) with a third place finish in the consolations over St. Joseph's Dominick Carfagno; Lenny Smith (220) in second after a rematch of his Bergen Holiday final to Don Bosco's Zack Chakonis ended in a 2-1 defeat; Carmine Goldsack (285) in second despite riding through the quarters and semis easily it was Old Tappan's Keith Rodman who came out on top; another Bergen Holiday final rematch took place at 106 with Tyler Casamenti and Joe Trovato with the Paramus Spartan again taking first; and lastly top-seeded DJ Tirelli who could not keep up with Northern Highland's Matt Murphy and finished in second.

Bergen Catholic basketball ended the season with a 72-63 victory over Old Tappan despite a low scoring first half of 9 points. but strong middle periods of 30 and 23 to pull off the win. Kyle Queiro led with 18 points, John Tsimis 16 and Richie Deluca with 13.
Down in Toms River on Saturday, Matt Koh of River Dell was the lone indoor track athlete to place in the top 10 during the State Meet of Champions competition. Koh took ninth in the shot put with a throw of 52-8 1/4.
