Library's Tile Mural Project Begins in River Edge

With the help of artist Marion Grebow, the has begun seeking sponsors for its historical tile mural showcasing the story of River Edge has it began from early settlers arriving along the Hackensack River to the battle at New Bridge, from when several New York Yankees called the borough home and up to present day.

The murals are the final piece to the library's Interior Makeover project which included a new , additional computers, desks and chairs for patrons, new carpeting and fresh coats of paint, established a quiet study area for students and rearranged shelving in the Children's Section so that the collection is more accessible and more open and inviting to children and their caregivers.

"This will be an enduring work of public art that will depict the history and culture of River Edge right in the foyer of the Library," Library Director Daragh O'Connor said.

Each tile piece will incorporate something different about town from its citizens (past and present) to famous former residents, local flora and fauna, bookspines with names of donors and images of current, former and historic landmarks.

Some of the tiles that are already completed are of George Washington's march past the , The , and Demarest Landing.

"We may do half of the mural at a time, it really depends on how fast it takes to get the tiles in," O'Connor said. "Once people really see what's happening, that's when it will really get started. It's a work in progress."
