Remembering the Newsmakers of 2011

A look back at the people who made headlines in River Edge and Oradell

One thing is sure in the river lands of Riverside and Delford, there's plenty of news. Here is a look back in remembrance of the people who passed away this past year in River Edge and Oradell for 2011.

Matthew Pellettere

, a 37-year-old probationary member of the (REVAS), died of a heart attack in January while attempting to respond to an emergency call. Following the news of his death, took to Facebook in support of their fallen comrade and many attended his in the borough.

To honor his memory, an Education Fund was set in place for his children Jessica and Michael (donations should be made payable to the Ambulance Corp., can be sent to The Pellettere Children’s Education Fund C/O River Edge Vol. Ambulance Corps. P O Box 44, River Edge NJ 07661) and then over the summer, members of REVAS took to the streets to get healthy in a style weight loss competition.

Beating the odds for several years, 's shining smile went out in February after a lengthy battle with Tay-Sachs. The six-year-old became an inspiration for the children in the River Edge school district after donating her hair to Locks of Love and then as the icon for the now annual Trick-or-Treat for Tay-Sachs candy collection.

Over the past 3 years, more than $23,000 has been collected and donated to the Cure Tay-Sachs Foundation while over 1800 pounds of candy were donated to the CUMAC (Center of United Methodist Aid to the Community Ecumenically Concerned Helping Others) of Paterson for the homeless.

Memorial donations can continually be made to the Cure Tay-Sachs Foundation.

William Lindsley

An avid Red Sox fan and former River Edge borough attorney, got to see his Bo-Sox take out the Pittsburgh Pirates one last time over the summer before his death. 

While he had a private practice in Hackensack, Lindsley also served as the borough attorney for a decade and as the Planning Board attorney. Memorial donations may be made to either Lily’s Pantry or St. Jude Children’s Hospital.

Anthony "Bud" Korteweg

With a fly fishing rod and keys to a Rolls Royce, Korteweg was a longtime face in River Edge as the owner of The Coachworks, a business inspired by the independent Rolls-Royce and Bentley motorcar garages of postwar England as well as restoring the Edgecroft estate and gardens. 

An of local historical architecture and fiercely proud of River Edge’s storied landmarks, he fought to preserve the historic cobblestone streets of Lincoln and Webb Avenues in the 1970s and then the slate roof on the River Edge Borough Hall.
