River Edge May Seek Grant Curbing Flooding

The potential grant could cover 100% of the project, freeing up capital budget monies

For residents on Voorhis Avenue in River Edge between Bogert and Elm Avenues, torrential downpours can be a nightmare as inadequate drainage systems lead to flooding issues. And while the council placed $100,000 in the towards alleviating the problem, the borough may now seek a Department of Transportation grant to assist in covering the sewer upgrades.

According to Capital Alternatives grant writer Marlene Casey, the borough could seek a non-matching state Department of Transportation grant through the Local Aid Infrastructure Fund.

"The grant would cover 100 percent of the project, the borough just has to provide a design engineer," Casey said.

As part of alleviating the drainage issues on Voorhis Avenue, borough engineer Robert Costa has proposed placing two large inlets at the Oak Avenue intersection to collect the runoff. He estimated the project could cost between $100,000 to $150,000 to complete the work.

The governing body unanimously approved going forward with seeking a DOT grant for work on Voorhis Avenue.
