Third Generation Ophthalmologist Finds Home in River Edge

After her Elizabeth Street office closed, Dr. Marta Ponce-Contreras knew she wanted to stay in River Edge and continue practicing comprehensive eye care for adults and children. This week, she along with friends and family celebrated the grand opening of her new ophthalmology practice, .

"I love the area and thank everyone for their support," Ponce-Contreras said.

The Guatemalan-native turned Ramsey resident is a third generation ophthalmologist following in the footsteps of her grandfather and father. Her brother also follows in the family trade as each generation has spent time at the New York Eye and Ear Infirmary.

Ponce-Contreras earned her medical degree from La Universidad Francisco Marroquin in Guatemala in 1998 and the received certification from the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates. She completed her internship with Saint Barnabas Medical Center New York Eye and Ear Infirmary.

Employees of Eye Care of River Edge are fluent in English and Spanish to ease their patients comfort.

The new 1,625 square-foot, state-of-the-art vision center, just off of Route 4 West, is fully-equipped with the most advanced technology for the diagnosis and treatment of a full-range of eye diseases and conditions.

Ponce-Contreras, services include complete eye examinations, prescription of glasses and contact lenses, screening and management of glaucoma, diabetic eye disease, macular degeneration, and dry eye syndrome. Dr. Ponce-Contreras is a skillful surgeon and has a lot of experience in cataract surgery and laser procedures for the treatment of glaucoma and other eye conditions.
