Track Stars Tie School Records in NYC

A weekly recap of River Dell and Bergen Catholic sports

River Dell Indoor Track competed at the Armory Track Center in NYC at the Track Universe meet on Dec. 30. Craig Marulis tied two school records running a 23.7 in the 200 and a 51.8 in the 400. Grace Behrens also tied a school record with a 5'0" high jump. Austin Berninger (47'3" in the shot) and Calvin Hartman (12'6" in the pole vault) each won the first individual championships at the meet.

Also competing for the Golden Hawks were Brandon Jurasin (5'10" high jump), Alex D'Esposito (5'2" high jump), Mike Boucher (17'11" long jump), Matt Koh (44'10" shot put), Chris Desanctis in the pantathlon (55m hurdles 8.4, long jump 18’4 3/4”, shot put 26’2 3/4”, high jump 5’7 3/4” and 1000m 3:12.8), girls 4x400m relay (4:17.1), Behrens (31'8" triple jump), Bridget Brindley (9'0" pole vault), and Laura Oh (31'1" shot put).

A scrappy Dumont boys basketball team brought the Golden Hawks down a peg in a back-and-forth race on the court, 58-42. After the first quarter both squads were tied at 15 but after that the Huskies took control and out-paced River Dell each possession. Sean Boland led all Hawks with 12 points followed by Tim Barnes' 11.

Bowling continues to struggle for the Hawks as the girls fell 5-2 to Tenafly while the boys were completely shut out, 7-0. Max Barnett had a high series of 621 (high games 254, 209).

In the parochial Battle of Rt. 17, Paramus Catholic was not able to overcome a tough BC wrestling squad in a staggering 73-3 decimation of the Paladins. Even without Connor Melde (132), the Crusaders dominated each weight class except for Melde's with PC's Billy Duby earning the lone win. The Crusaders earned eight pins and three bouts by forfeit.

BC Bowling rolled to a 7-0 shutout over St. Joseph Regional this week. Briand Hund had a high game of 204 followed by Freddy Dressel's 202.
