World Trade Center Beam Finds Home Outside Borough Hall

The PBA designed First Responder's Memorial received approval to be located outside of the police department and borough hall in River Edge

Since the beginning of the year, the River Edge PBA Local 201 has been busy narrowing down locations for a . On Monday night they received approval for the location of choice - outside of the and .

Sgt. Curt Wilhelm and Officer Marc Abate had initially proposed three locations in from the Public Safety Building to the Public Library to 140 Kinderkamack Road. The design plans created by  have the 16-foot long steel I-beam running vertically to display the cut out cross.

The cross, which was not made for any religious significance, was created when workers at Ground Zero were removing the beams and cut out a cross for each victim's family.

"The memorial would look the same at either location (the public safety building or library)," Sgt. Curt Wilhelm said. "The water feature was removed due to cost estimates and maintenance costs during the winter."

Prior to applying for the steel I-beam from the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, the PBA sought out the opinions of those families that lost someone during 9/11. River Edge lost five residents Jennifer FialkoTodd OuidaScott RohnerChristopher Allingham and Bon Seok Koo during the attacks and several families still reside in the borough.

The entire project will be funded by the PBA, through private donations and fundraising efforts.

The PBA is planning on hosting a benefit at on April 18. All proceeds raised during that time will be used for the creation of the memorial.
