Car Stolen From Rumson Found In Newark

The key fob had been left inside the car. Police are urging people to be extra careful.

RUMSON, NJ — A car was stolen from the driveway of a home in Rumson on Friday night, according to the Borough of Rumson Police Department.

A group of car thieves were in the area and tried to steal cars from residents, looking for unlocked ones with key fobs inside, police said. They started as early as 9 p.m., according to reports from residents, who saw them walking around.

The group managed to find an unlocked car with a key fob inside and stole it. The car was found by police the next day in Newark.

Police said the people who are coming into town stealing cars are dangerous and part of an organized criminal enterprise with connections to gangs.

"By carelessly leaving your car unlocked with the key fobs inside, you are inviting these criminals into Rumson and jeopardizing the safety of you, your family and your fellow community members," police said in a statement. "We cannot stress this enough!"
