Monmouth County Among Top 50 Counties for Children's Health

New rankings look at how both the environment and health factors affect children's health.

Monmouth County ranked 25 among America’s 50 Healthiest Counties for Kids 2014-15.

The rankings are a part of a U.S. News set of rankings being published for the second time. The rankings were developed with the help of The University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute. The institute looks at health data for the U.S. populations as part of its County Health Rankings and Roadmaps program.

The list takes into account how environmental and health factors affect the health of children under the age of 18.

The data assessed includes fewer infant deaths, fewer low birth weight babies, fewer deaths from injuries, fewer teen births and fewer children in poverty.

Other factors such as percentage of children without health insurance, air quality, rates of adult smoking and adult obesity and access to physicians and exercise opportunities were also considered.

All the variables considered were equally weighted.

Monmouth County received an overall score of 85.7 out of a 100 and had one of the lowest infant death rates.

Moving outside the hospital, Monmouth County was also featured as one of the counties with an innovative initiative that helped boost the state of well-being for kids.

In case you didn’t know, Monmouth County Libraries are always virtually open. E-books and audiobooks are always available for checkout. As long as you have a library card, titles can be downloaded to one’s personal computer and are automatically removed at the due date leading to the impossibility of ever paying late fees.

This is especially convenient for kids who do not have to worry about finding a ride to the library. Reading helps prevent stress, eases depression and helps you sleep better. With Monmouth County encouraging easy access to reading, its devotion to public health is evident.
