Budget falls within the 2 percent state-mandated cap

The Rumson Board of Education last week held a public hearing for and approved its 2013-14 budget.

The overall $14.5 million budget with a tax levy, or amount to be raised by taxes, of $13.7 million, up from roughly $13.4 million last year, falls within the state-mandated 2 percent spending cap.

• Of the total budget, an estimated $4.9 million is allocated for regular instruction/programs;

• Approximately $1 million is anticipated to cover special education costs;

• There are an estimated 1,000 students in the 2013-14 student body;

• Per-pupil cost is estimated at $12,965, down from $13,053 last year, with the cost at $12,098 in 2010-11;

• Of that amount, per-pupil cost of total classroom instruction is anticipated to cost of $7,829;

• Employee benefits represent 33.33 percent of salaries.
