September 20, 2023, Rumson, NJ - For the first time in 128 years, one of the most iconic buildings in Rumson, The Borden Carriage House, is on the market in pristine condition. Known locally as "The Clock House," the home recently won two historical awards for the meticulous restoration efforts performed by the current owners, including the Rumson Historic Preservation Award and the Monmouth County Preservation Award.
“We are very proud to represent the sale of such an iconic landmark in town. Every home has a story, and no one understands that better than Christie’s International Real Estate. Blending the worlds of art and real estate, we are very proud to market 68 West River Road in Rumson, a property with such rich history and provenance,” said Nancy Golden, the agent representing the sale.
Designed by the famed Gilded Age architectural firm, Carrère and Hastings, the carriage house was commissioned by the Borden Family in 1895, one of Rumson's founding families; they donated the land for Victory Park, the football stadium and the clocktower on Rumson Fair Haven High School, all still in use today. Carrère and Hastings designed some 600+ projects for world-renowned clients, including Henry Flagler, the Rockefellers, Andrew Carnegie, Henry Clay Frick, Murry Guggenheim, J.P. Morgan, Mrs. Vanderbilt, Edward H. Harriman, and Alfred I.DuPont. Notably, the firm is also responsible for the design of The New York Public Library.
In the 1980’s the carriage house was converted from a barn into a home. The owners scoured the surrounding areas in order to source building materials from the same time period as the house, including a set of French doors from the estate of JP Morgan, Jr. The previous owner invested approximately $800,000 into the property, with many modern upgrades—including an elevator, gourmet kitchen, landscaping, and a gorgeous master suite with a balcony overlooking the Navesink River. The owners desired to have a working clock on the building again and preserve one of the existing outside clock faces. The clock now on the front of the house is a working replica of the E. Howard Tower Clock that was original to the carriage house in 1895. The original clock face that was on the house was salvaged and hung on the third floor next to the Clock Works.

Today, “The Clock House” is a timeless retreat unlike any other. Modern day luxury blends seamlessly while respectfully maintaining the original character. An open floor plan, 10-foot ceilings, an elevator and a stunning gourmet kitchen are just the beginning. There is an expansive primary suite with a balcony overlooking the Navesink River. The third floor boasts guest quarters with a second kitchen and additional living space. All of this gracefully situated on 1.7 acres of manicured grounds with a pool and treehouse. The home is offered at $3,500,000. For more information, contact Nancy Golden at 732-800-5050 or visit www.christiesrealestate.com.
