Rutgers Crew Celebrates 150th Anniversary at the Ray Catena Auto Group Rumson Boat Race
College Coaches and Olympians Reception: Friday Evening September 26, and the Collegiate Classic Rowing Event: Saturday Morning September 27

Collegiate rowing returns once again to Rumson and Fair Haven on the beautiful Navesink River. Special this year, the 150th Anniversary of Rutgers Crew will be celebrated. Rutgers alumni and supporters are encouraged to wear scarlet and to help Coach Steve Wagner cut the celebratory cake at the Coaches Reception, which will be held Friday evening, September 26th at the Riverhouse, Rumson Country Club’s fabulous new Shrewsbury Riverfront venue. According to Wagner, “The Rumson Boat Race has become the highlight of our fall rowing season at Rutgers. We are proud to take part in bringing top college rowing back to the historic Navesink River. This is a special year for our program, as it marks the 150th Anniversary of Crew at Rutgers. It is hard to imagine that President Abe Lincoln was still in the White House when the first Rutgers Crew took to the Raritan River in New Brunswick in 1864.” The Reception is open to all enthusiasts. Ticket information is available at www.RumsonBoatRace.org.
On Saturday morning, September 27th around 7am, adjacent to Victory Park in Rumson, the college Men’s and Women’s crews will launch their boats and challenge each other for the Governor’s Cup and the Mayor’s Cup. Participating this year are Drexel, Rutgers and Villanova.
In the grand tradition of the Henley Royal Regatta, local families will house the athletes and coaches on the evening of Friday, September 26th. Many Rumson and Fair Haven families have hosted the athletes overnight for every race and look forward to their return.
