Bayonne Doctor Who Recklessly Prescribed Semaglutides, Other Drugs Loses License: State

A doctor who practiced in Bayonne for more than 25 years had his medical license permanently revoked Monday by the state Board.

BAYONNE, NJ — A doctor who practiced in Bayonne for more than 25 years had his medical license permanently revoked Monday by the state Board of Medical Examiners.

The doctor is John R. McGee, M.D. For years, he ran a doctor's office on Kennedy Boulevard in Bayonne.

The state's decision, filed Sept. 9, was made after Dr. McGee was accused of multiple forms of professional misconduct, including maintaining an inappropriate relationship with a patient, improperly prescribing medication — sometimes using other physicians’ prescription pads — and indiscriminately prescribing the addictive painkiller oxycodone, human growth hormone and semaglutide, the weight-management drug used in Ozempic.

McGee previously had his medical license suspended for five years.

Dr. McGee’s medical license was revoked in California earlier this year after he was found to have lied about the status of his New Jersey license on sworn statements submitted to that state’s medical board. The New Jersey Board determined that this out-of-state disciplinary action, combined with the serious allegations of misconduct in New Jersey, provides grounds for the permanent revocation of his license.

Dr. McGee's medical license was first suspended in 2016. It was while his New Jersey license was suspended that he tried to apply for a medical license in California, and lied on his application to that state's medical board.

In 2016, McGee was investigated by the New Jersey Attorney General for indiscriminate prescribing drugs, in that case prescribing excessive amounts of oxycodone to five patients who experienced pain.

"Despite X-rays that showed the man's hip and spine were 'mild degenerative,' McGee continued to prescribe oxycodone 'every four to six hours for pain (up to 360 tablets per month) for approximately three-and-a-half years,'" NJ.com previously reported.

He was also accused of improperly prescribing human growth hormone to a man who wanted to boost his muscle mass.

"In the one case that did not involve oxycodone, McGee was accused of prescribing hormone replacement therapy off-label to a 33-year-old man, providing him with drugs including Arimidex. There is no legitimate medical indication for Arimidex in men. Arimidex Norditropin is an aromatase inhibitor which is only approved for the treatment of breast cancer. It is misused in combination with growth hormone, HCG and testosterone to increase muscle mass."

At the time, Dr. McGree was also ordered a permanent cease and desist from prescribing human growth hormone and other controlled dangerous substances.

Dr. McGee can never again re-apply for his medical license in the state of New Jersey. He must immediately cease all patient contact, is prohibited from charging or receiving fees for medical services rendered by others in New Jersey, and is required to notify patients how to access to their medical records. Dr. McGee is also barred from managing, supervising or otherwise influencing the practice of medicine in the state.
