Hudson County's Biggest Plant Sale Of Year Rescheduled To This Sunday

From 10-2 Sunday, there will be a large plant/flower sale in Braddock Park in North Bergen. These are the flowers that do best in Secaucus:

SECAUCUS, NJ — Wondering what kind of flowers and plants you should plant in your yard?

This Sunday, Oct. 23 will be the biggest plant sale of the year, hosted by the Native Plant Society of Hudson County. The plant sale will be from 10:00 am. – 2:00 p.m. at James J. Braddock Park/Nature’s Park Café & Eatery at 5 Lakeside Dr. South in North Bergen.

This is what's called a "native plant sale," as they are specifically selling plants, flowers and seeds that thrive in Hudson County soil.

From Kim Correro, a member of the Native Plant Society of Hudson County and a Rutgers Environmental Steward, these are the flowers and plants that do best in Secaucus soil:

  • Eastern Red Columbine
  • Golden Alexanders
  • Swamp milkweed
  • Brown Eyed Susan
  • Purple Coneflowers
  • Great Blue Lobelia
  • Red Cardinal Flower
  • Wild Geranium
  • Joe Pye Weed
  • Blue False Indigo
  • Foxglove Beardtounge
  • New England Asters

“Fall is the best time of year to plant,”said co-leader Lorraine Freeney. “The air is cooling but the soil is still warm and plants can establish strong root systems before winter sets in and without having to deal with the stress of summer heat. Providing access to native plants in this quantity is especially important this fall. We had such a drought this year and many wildlife gardens have struggled."
