Kids' Nature Programs At Liberty State Park This August

If you're looking for something to do with kids during the dog days of summer, here are free activities at Liberty State Park:

JERSEY CITY, NJ — If you're looking for something to do with kids during the dog days of summer, here are free activities offered by the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection:

Pre-registration is required for all programs unless it says otherwise. Space is limited, so you must sign your children up in advance. To register for a program, please contact the Liberty State Park Nature Center at 201-915-3400, ext. 503 or email LSPNatureCenter@dep.nj.gov. The Nature Center is located at 275 Freedom Way inside Liberty State Park. Children must be accompanied by an adult. You may register a maximum of six participants per reservation. Pets are not permitted on programs unless they are service animals.

Low Tide Beach Walk Sunday, August 3 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.

Come on out to Liberty State Park for a beach walk and scavenger hunt at Caven Point Beach! We will meet in Lot #1 located at 300 Morris Pesin Drive and then walk over to our beach area. Please be advised there is over a mile and a half of walking involved. Be sure to dress to be outdoors and wear old shoes that can get wet or muddy. If it is a hot day, sunscreen and water are also recommended. All ages welcome.

Nature Walk and Craft Thursday, August 7 and Friday, August 22 11:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.

Shorebird Walk Saturday, August 9 10:00 a.m. - 11:30 a.m.

Located along the Atlantic Flyway, Liberty State Park is home to over 250 distinct species of birds. Join us for a guided walk to learn about some of these species. We will meet at the Nature Center located at 275 Freedom Way. Free parking is available in Lot #6, across the street from the center. Please dress to be outdoors and bring binoculars if you have them. We have a limited number that can be borrowed. Recommended for ages 8 & up.

Monarch Butterfly Magic! Friday, August 15, Thursday, August 28 & Saturday, August 30 10:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m.

Get up close and personal with the monarch butterfly. We’ll learn all about the life cycle, feeding habits and migration journey of this amazing little insect! There will also be a butterfly craft to make and take home. Meet at the Nature Center located at 275 Freedom Way. Be sure to dress to be outdoors and wear shoes comfortable for walking. If it is a hot day, sunscreen, water and insect repellent are also recommended.

Volunteer Shoreline Cleanup Saturday, August 17 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.

Looking for volunteer opportunities in Liberty State Park? Come help lend a hand cleaning up the shores of the Richard J. Sullivan Natura Area by removing trash that has come in with the tides. We will meet at the Nature Center located at 275 Freedom Way. Please dress to be outdoors, wear shoes that can get wet/muddy, and bring work gloves if you have them. If it is a hot day, sunscreen water, and insect repellent are also recommended. Recommended for ages 6 and up.

Native Plant Walk Wednesday, August 27 10:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m.

Discover the beauty and benefits of local plants with our Park Naturalist and Trail Steward. Join us for an informative walk through our vibrant pollinator garden and walking trails. Learn simple tips to identify common native plants, fascinating facts about flowering natives and their role in the ecosystem, and uncover interesting past and present-day plant uses. We will meet at the Nature Center located at 275 Freedom Way. Please dress to be outdoors and wear shoes comfortable for walking. Recommended for ages 10 & up.

August 23 - Sisters Afield Hook and Cook at Hackettstown Hatchery, 23 Reese Ave Hackettstown, NJ
August 26-27 - Kayak Fishing at Sedge Island, Barnegat Bay off Island Beach State Park in Ocean County

Also, the Pequest Trout Hatchery and Natural Resource Education Center, west of Hackettstown, teaches children and adults how to fish and fly fish.
