Secaucus Hospital Owner Yan Moshe Donates $400K To Steve Fulop's Gov. Campaign
Moshe donated $400,000 to the governor campaign of Steve Fulop, who supports Moshe's hostile takeover attempt of Christ Hospital.

SECAUCUS, NJ — Patch already told you that Yan Moshe, the owner of the Secaucus hospital, is on a quest to take over Bayonne Medical Center, Hoboken University Medical Center and Christ Hospital in the Jersey City Heights.
But what hasn't been reported until now is that Moshe donated $400,000 to the governor campaign of Jersey City Mayor Steve Fulop, who supports Moshe's hostile takeover of Christ, the hospital in his city.
Fulop is currently in a very heated Democratic primary with Newark Mayor Ras Baraka, Congressman Josh Gottheimer, Congresswoman Mikie Sherrill, Montclair mayor and president of the statewide teachers' union Sean Spiller and former NJ Senate President Steve Sweeney.

The primary election will be June 10.
Moshe personally donated $400,000 to Fulop's super PAC Coalition for Progress, the Jersey City Times reported May 1. But that's not all: Vivek Garipalli, who used to own Christ Hospital, donated $1 million to Fulop's super PAC and current Christ Hospital owner Avery Eisenreich donated $100,000 to Fulop.

"In 2012, Garipalli sold the prized land beneath the hospital with its Manhattan views to Eisenreich. Eisenreich’s company has since charged rents that some say could destabilize hospital finances and open the door to future residential development," wrote the Jersey City Times.
This fuels speculation that whoever becomes the new owner of Christ Hospital will just tear the hospital down and turn the property into condos.
Congresswoman Sherrill's campaign said of Fulop's super PAC donations: "For more than two years, Fulop's run a campaign desperately trying to rebrand himself as a reformer. During these last two weeks, Jersey voters are getting a peek behind the curtain at the real Steven Fulop — a model of the very corruption and secrecy he insists he’s against ... Fulop has put Jersey City up for sale to the highest bidder to fund his personal political ambitions. His attempt to suddenly reinvent himself as a reformer is as laughable as it is insulting to voters."
Moshe's plan is the Secaucus hospital, Bayonne, Hoboken and Christ will operate as Hudson Health System, which he will be the sole owner of.
All three of those hospitals used to be owned by CarePoint Health, which declared bankruptcy last November. But Moshe started his hostile takeover attempt long before CarePoint's bankruptcy filing.
In November, the New Jersey Department of Health officially approved Moshe to take over Bayonne Medical Center. But Moshe still has not been able to assume ownership of Christ Hospital and Hoboken. Ownership remains tied up in CarePoint's bankruptcy filing.
Moshe was a real estate developer when he bought the old Meadowlands Hospital in Secaucus in 2018, and renamed it Hudson Regional. When Moshe bought it, the Secaucus hospital was routinely given "D" grades for patient safety and was at risk of being shut down by the state. At the time it was sold, the Secaucus hospital was operating at 13 percent capacity, meaning only 26 of its 200 beds were occupied on any given day.
Before he bought the Secaucus hospital, Moshe owned two surgery centers in Bergen County. The same year he bought the Secaucus hospital, the NJ Department of Health said his Saddle Brook facility may have exposed patients to Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C and HIV through lab mix-ups involving blood. As many as 3,000 people could have been exposed to HIV between January and September of 2017.
