SECAUCUS, NJ — In the next few years, the bridge that carries Meadowlands Parkway next to Harmon Cove Towers will be torn down and entirely replaced.

This was first reported in the Hudson Reporter last week, but confirmed by Secaucus town administrator Gary Jeffas.

This is the bridge that carries Meadowlands Parkway over the Norfolk Southern freight rail lines.

Hudson County will actually take over ownership of the bridge and plans to tear it down and add bike lanes to the new one.

As Secaucus residents know, many people either walk or bike across that bridge and right now it is very unsafe, as there are no bike lanes and a very narrow sidewalk on the sides of the bridge. People even bike or walk over the bridge to get to the Secaucus Junction train station.

"I do not have exact information on the timing, but it will be years," Jeffas told Patch this week. "The bridge needs to be designed, approved by the state, out to bid, etc. In our initial meetings with the design team from Hudson County last year, I recall them estimating the project would be completed in seven to nine years. Therefore, I would say we are at least five years away if all went well."

The project will be funded by both the town of Secaucus and Hudson County.

There is already a bike lane on Meadowlands Parkway and Secaucus wants to add more bike lanes throughout town.
