SECAUCUS, NJ — Secaucus recently filed a lawsuit challenging its county tax ratio.

The town of Secaucus said it was "pleased to report our efforts were successful" and the lawsuit will result in a reduction of approximately $1.5 million from the overall amount the town of Secaucus has to pay in taxes to Hudson County for 2025.

That is $1.5 million the town of Secaucus does not have to pay in taxes to the county and can instead use for other purposes, said Mayor Mike Gonnelli this week.

Hudson County charges a tax to Secaucus and other towns for services it provides to the towns. Gonnelli and the Secaucus town CFO said they thought the assessed tax rate was too high, and that's why they challenged it — successfully — in court.

"This is a tremendous tax savings to our residents and business community," said Gonnelli. "We are very happy with the outcome of this tax litigation, and this is just another example of how my administration continuously works for the benefit of our community."
