58-Year-Old Woman Killed In Rt. 1 Crash In South Brunswick

Crash occurred Monday evening. The woman was taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital where she died of her injuries, police said.

SOUTH BRUNSWICK, NJ - A 58-year-old Middlesex County woman was killed in a Route 1 crash on Monday evening, South Brunswick police said.

The crash was reported at 6 p.m. on Route 1 North at Independence Way.

According to preliminary investigation, the woman was driving a 2016 Hyundai Elantra headed north on Route 1 approaching the intersection of Independence Way.

The Hyundai left the road, went onto the grass, and struck a utility pole, police said.

After striking the pole, the force of the impact sent the Hyundai back onto the northbound lanes of Route 1 where the Hyundai struck a 2004 Honda Odyssey being driven by a 71-year-old South Brunswick woman, authorities said.

The 58-year-old woman suffered multiple injuries and was transported by South Brunswick EMS and paramedics to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick. She died of her injuries at the hospital, police said.

South Brunswick Police Traffic Safety Bureau was at the scene till midnight reconstructing the crash. Investigators are looking into whether a medical episode or other reasoning can explain why the Hyundai left the roadway and struck the pole.

In addition to Police and EMS, the Kingston Fire Department and New Jersey Department of Transportation responded to the scene.
