Former Hockey Standout, 19, Killed In Thanksgiving Crash: NJ Weekend

NEW JERSEY — The Thanksgiving weekend proved to be deadly on New Jersey roads. Six people died and at least four were seriously injured in crashes across the state.

Dog Killed, Man Hospitalized In Hit-&-Run
A hit-and-run in Absecon killed a dog and hospitalized a man on Saturday morning.

Shortly after midnight on Saturday, a man and his dog were struck by a vehicle at the intersection of Highland Boulevard and Marlborough Avenue, police said. The dog was killed in the crash, and the man, Syed Hoque, 25, of Absecon was taken to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center with life-threatening injuries. The driver fled the scene, police said.

Pedestrian Fatally Stuck In Howell
A pedestrian was killed after they were hit by an SUV in Howell on Saturday. The incident took place around 7:45 p.m. at the intersection of Strickland Road and Route 9 when the person tripped and stumbled into oncoming traffic, according to authorities.
The 71-year-old man was pronounced dead on the scene and he was not identified by police. The driver of the involved vehicle, a 58-year-old Howell resident remained on the scene, authorities said. No charges have been filed.
Pedestrian Stuck And Killed In Trenton
A woman was fatally struck while she was trying to cross Route 129 in Trenton on Friday afternoon, according to media reports. A car hit the 40-year-old near Hamilton Avenue and she was taken to a nearby hospital where she was later pronounced dead, News12 reported.
19-Year-Old Killed In Thanksgiving Crash
A 19-year-old former high school hockey player was killed in a Thanksgiving night crash in Randolph. Gavin Barooah, of Ledgewood in Roxbury Township was killed in a two-car crash at the intersection of Morris and Sussex Turnpikes, according to NJ.com.
The incident took place around 8 p.m. Thursday. Barooah was pronounced dead at the scene, NJ 101.5 reported. The driver of the Jeep was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.
Barooah graduated from Roxbury High School in 2024. He was named captain of the Roxbury High varsity hockey team in his senior year and received multiple honors in the All-Haas Division in MCSSIHL throughout his hockey career, according to his obituary.
1 Injured, 2 Critical After Driver Runs Red Light
A driver ran a red light and crashed into another car, causing serious injuries to a family in Edison early on Thanksgiving Day, Middlesex County Prosecutor Yolanda Ciccone and Edison Police Chief Thomas Bryan said.
Diego Mejia, 39, of Edison, sustained serious injuries but is in stable condition. His wife Jessica Naranjo, 35, of Woodbridge, and Mejia’s 15-year-old daughter sustained life-threatening injuries and are currently in critical condition, Ciccone said.

1 Killed, 2 Seriously Injured In Overnight Crash
One man was killed and two others injured in a crash that took place on Route 46 West in Hasbrouck Heights on Sunday.
Police responded to a single-car crash on Sunday around 2:28 a.m. On arrival officers found a 2019 Hyundai collided with a highway divider, seriously injuring all three occupants, according to TapInto.
All three were taken to a local hospital where a 57-year-old man was pronounced dead, Bergen Record said. One passenger remains in critical condition while the other is stable.
Bicyclist Killed In Jersey Shore Crash
A 55-year-old bicyclist was struck and killed by an SUV on Saturday night in West Long Branch.
The Long Branch resident was hit shortly after 9 p.m., in the area of State Route 36 and Monmouth Road, the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office said.
The bicyclist was rushed to Monmouth Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. The driver of the vehicle, an 18-year-old from Tinton Falls, remained on the scene. No charges or summonses have been issued as of Monday morning.
19-Year-Old Killed In Fiery Crash
A 19-year-old Bogota resident was killed in a fiery car crash Sunday night on I-80, according to media reports. Carmen Argenziano was driving an SUV near milepost 113 in Hope, NJ when he veered off the road and struck trees, NJ.com reported. The SUV caught fire due to the crash.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.
