Cops: Man Crashes After Falling Asleep While Talking to Girlfriend on Phone
No injuries were sustained after man crashes into utility pole.
A North Brunswick man was charged with drunk driving after he allegedly fell asleep behind the wheel while talking on a cell phone before crashing his car early Friday morning.
Thomas McMillian, 27, was charged with reckless driving, failure to maintain a lane, driving while using a cell phone, and having no insurance after a one-vehicle crash Sept. 20.
At 3:38 a.m., South Brunswick Police arrived at a crash on Friendship Road near Harmony Lane, where responding officers found a 2008 Nissan Altima sideways across the road after it struck a utility pole.
The driver, McMillian, told Officer Tim Hoover that he was talking to his girlfriend on his cell phone while he was driving, before he fell asleep and went off the road, according to police. The officer smelled the odor of alcohol on McMillian’s breath and had him perform sobriety tests, which he failed, police said.
McMillian was transported to police headquarters, processed and released pending his first court appearance.
