SBHS Freshman Girls Volleyball Team Cruises to 10-0 Start

Inexperienced South Brunswick High School frosh volleyball team exceeds all expectations in dominating start.

By Jody Knehr

The South Brunswick High School freshman volleyball team has opened their 2013 fall season with a perfect 10-0 record under seventh year coach, Kelly Forthun.

"This is an incredibly athletic group," Forthun noted recently.  "They have limited volleyball experience since we do not have a middle school program and volleyball is not a recreational sport offered to the kids in town like baseball, soccer, and football.  Many of them join volleyball clubs at Crossroads, but it is not the same as actually playing.  We are behind a lot of schools around and they have picked things up very quickly and are exceeding expectations at this point."

The team has played a number of tough squads from the area such as Bridgewater, East Brunswick, and Rancocas Valley Regional, but their biggest tests will come when they square off against Old Bridge and Hunterdon Central Regional.

"Hunterdon Central has club volleyball down to the fifth grade level," Forthun added,” and Old Bridge is one of the few schools around that have a middle school program.  Those schools are always tough for us, but this group of girls is ready for the challenge."

Team members include: Jillian Chambres, Sydney Cortez, Olivia Gonzalez, Miranda Irizarry, Jaime Klemas, Samantha Knehr, Natalia Louhisdon, Amanda Palumbo, Danielle Peterson, Serena Reggiero, Melissa Scaletti, Lindsay Szucs, Rachel Tamasi and Nina Trach.

The young Vikings hit the tough part of their schedule next when they face Red Bank Central on the road, Old Bridge at home and Hunterdon Central away.
